COLLABORATION & COOPERATION

Association of Jewish communities of Graz and Ljubljana

Renewing the relationship between Graz and Ljubljana showed that cross-border cooperation and the resulting synergies have the potential to revive the lives of both communities. Which is why, in August 2021, the Jewish community of Graz and the Jewish community of Slovenia founded The Federation of Jewish communities of Graz and Ljubljana.

.

This federation is a one-of-a-kind supranational merger of Jewish communities in Europe, with the aim of reinforcing and developing the community life of both entities, whose task lies in the conservation of Jewish values, the development of Jewish religious life, and the fight against antisemitism. The work of the federation has been continued by Jewish Association of the Republic of Slovenia – Orthodox Jewish Community.

Until today, the civil registry of the Jews in Ljubljana is kept in the archives of the Jewish community in Graz.

The collaborating communities in Graz and Ljubljana can also look back on a shared historical heritage. From the 1880s to the collapse of the Danubian Monarchy the Jews of the Krain, to which Ljubljana also belonged, were part of the Jewish community in Graz. The chief rabbi also was responsible for the rabbinical functions in today’s Slovenian capital. Until today, the civil registry of the Jews in Ljubljana is kept in the archives of the Jewish community in Graz.
